Lesson Observation
School: The Kings School
This is a medium sized 11-19 Comprehensive Forces School located in West Germany.
Focus: Lesson Observation Training is part of Monitoring and Evaluation for the Senior Management Team and a group of identified Middle Manager.
Activity: A senior consultant provided a two day negotiated school based programme. This involved a one day practical training session on the key features of effective lessons, methods and techniques on clasroom observation and the use of prompt sheets, guidance materials, protocols and feedback techniques. Day two centered upon "principles in practice" - a schedule of joint lesson observations undertaken by a range of volunteers from the previous day's course. The teaching across a variety of lessons was observed by the consultant and volunteers and the outcomes were recorded using pre-selected pro-formas. This was immediately followed up by the observer and the consultant discussing what had been seen, how and what feedback should be given to the teacher. The feedback session to the teacher was observed by the consultant, who afterwards debriefed the observer on the strengths and areas for development in technique.
Outcome: This powerful combination of training, followed by the immediacy of putting into practice what had been learned, provided all participants with confidence about making informed and objective judgements and ways of recording these, concentrating on teaching activities and not personalities.
